London is known as a Mecca of culture. The city is regarded as a global seat for patronising art, architecture, fashion and literature. But, for quite some time, the city has been bubbling to the brim for its new found enthusiasm for rock concerts. London has got a good number of avenues where modern music and rock concerts are regular features.
Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre in west London witnessed Pink Floyd’s two sell-out performances of The Dark Side of the Moon Suite as well as other pivotal performances. Led Zeppelin performed five sell-out nights in a row in May 1975 which are now accredited by many with the title of being the peak of the band’s musical career. DVD footage of the concert was released with much success in 1995. Since, musical greats from a variety of genres from The Rolling Stones to Madonna to Radiohead to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers have enjoyed the incredible atmosphere of Earl’s Court which is now also the venue for the ‘Give It a Name’ music festival.
London Astoria at Charing Cross has also reached cult venue status, though it was later in arrival on the rock music scene, one of its biggest concerts being the last Manic Street Preachers gig before the disappearance of Richey Edwards. It’s played host to the likes of Steve Vai, Nirvana and The Arctic Monkeys and retains a position at the forefront of London’s music scene though not for much longer. During his time as Major, Ken Livingstone announced that the Astoria must be destroyed to make way for ‘Crossrail’. Student campaigns have been to no avail.
David Bowie performed his last Ziggy Stardust concert in the legendary Hammersmith Apollo, also a venue of Queen’s and The Beatles’. Formerly known as the Hammersmith Odeon, still affectionately known as the Hammy-O, the site has been a significant recording venue for artists such as Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Guns ‘N Roses and more recently The Raconteurs, racking up an impressive musical and cultural history over the years.
Formerly the Millennium Dome, the O2 is now one of London’s most striking modern venues and has so far been used for a wide variety of exhibitions and concerts on a mammoth scale, including the Led Zeppelin reunion concert in 2007. Also in 2007, Prince announced a seven night run at the arena which was later increased to 21 nights due to popular demand. It seems that the O2 has already gained favour as an immensely impressive venue and will continue attract music’s biggest names for many years to come.
